Garage Sale Tips & Tricks

Now that spring is here, you might be itching to have a garage sale! This is a great way to make some extra money while clearing out your garage. After all, they say that one man’s trash is another’s treasure. If you are hoping to unload some of your “treasure,” you might as well make some money at the same time. Here are some tips on getting your garage organized as you prepare for your garage sale.

  • Gather up plenty of boxes. You’re going to need them! As you go through your garage, don’t just pile up the items for sale; this is just moving the mess around. Instead, you’ll be putting the items in boxes. If you have large items like furniture, then those will just go in one corner of the garage for now. The boxes will be stacked next to these larger pieces.
  • Begin in one area of the garage. Don’t get sidetracked by darting from one side of the garage to the other. You want to do this in a methodical way. Start in one corner and take a look at what you have. If it’s garage shelves full of old books to sell, for example, label a box, “books,” and start filling it up. (Don’t make these too heavy.) If you have old dishes or seasonal decorations that you don’t want on the same set of shelves, simply grab and label more boxes.
  • Make friends with your packing tape. As soon as a box is full, seal it up, make sure it’s labeled, and put it in the corner. You are not going to be looking in this box again until shortly before the garage sale, so don’t even think about leaving it untaped. That will just tempt you to go through it and bring some of these unwanted items back into your home.
  • Keep garbage bags with you. Although the point is to gather up the items you want to sell at your garage sale, chances are good that as you start pulling things out of your garage cabinets, you’ll find junk that really needs to go in the trash. Put that in garbage bags and as they get filled, bring them down to the curb.
  • Organize the items you have left. Of course, you’re not going to be selling everything in your garage! If you find that you still don’t have a place for everything even after you do some major purging, you will need to invest in some garage organizers. Racks, shelving, gridwall, hooks and holders can really help you get your space whipped into shape!

Don’t feel as though you have to have your entire garage sale inventory gathered up in one day! Work on this little by little in anticipation of your sale. As long as you remember to keep labeling your boxes and placing like items together, setting up for the sale shouldn’t take you too long. When the going gets tough, remember that as you make more and more of a dent and are able to see more of your garage floor, you’ll be inspired to clear out even more clutter.
